Is the age of the careers CD-ROM over? The BSF IT contract may put the last nail in the coffin. Each CD-ROM to be loaded onto a school system under such a contract is classed as a 'package'. A Package is a piece of softwarethat is tested, uploaded and tested again beforebeing made available on a school intranet or VLE. A school is allowed 20 'Packages'per year under the local contract I know about.20 is a ridiculously small number for an average-sized school; anything over this is chargeable outside the agreement.
Careers Co-ordinators in BSF schools will need to think hard before purchasing CD-ROM-only resources.Careers-matching programs like Kudos and Pathfinder+HE are already available over the 'net as part of the licence;the best video sites are likewise..Happily, it is possible to set up a virtual Connexions/careers library with on-line-only resources.
I haven't fully investigated the challenges internet-only resources pose for bandwidth demands etc. It's something I need to do with our BSF schools.
R.I.P CD-ROMs.
